Subtle and Spacial Sounds

This research sought to reveal the level to which people become conscious of the relationships between sound and movement and sound and space.

Experiment 1: Agent Alpha An alternate-reality narrative game run on the iPod that tested the limitations of sound in delivering instructions for navigating physical space.

Experiment 2: FM Hack Tinkering with simple technology as a platform for sound interactions. By manipulating a pocket fm radio, a hybrid device was created that allows for the blending of FM radio transmissions and iPod music. The purpose of this device was to allow sound interactions to occur when people move in and out of FM transmission zones as they go about their daily routine. The application of such a device would define an invisible layer of spacial information that emerges in a subtle and spontaneous fashion.

Experiment 3: Talking Fan A user testing experiment that tested at what point people recognize subtle sound as it is synchronized to tangible objects.

Experiment 4: Sound Vista
A visualization of how sound could be used to change notions of distance and make the unheard, heard.

Experiment 5: Talking Weed A test that observes the way people react to hearing the unheard through physical barriers.
